How to Design Your First Graphic Tee
Type, placement, and color — the three decisions that make a first tee look pro instead of homemade. Our studio lead walks through each one.
Every great graphic tee starts with restraint. Pick one idea — one phrase, one mark, one illustration — and let it breathe. The most common beginner mistake is filling the whole chest; the strongest designs usually live in a print area no wider than 10 inches.
Placement matters as much as artwork. A classic left-chest hit reads premium and subtle, while a full-center print reads bold and streetwear. Match the placement to the wearer: chest hits for workwear and uniforms, center prints for statement pieces.
Color is the third lever. On dark garments, one or two ink colors pop harder than full-color art and cost less to print. On light garments, black plus one accent color rarely misses. When in doubt, send us your file — every Inkthread order gets a free digital proof before a single shirt is printed.
